Exfoliate by dry brushing upside down and massaging.

2.Then wash and condition using products that offer deep hydration. This is important because the skin’s natural reaction to the stimulation of shampooing is to over-produce oil and skin cells. Hormone shifts and imbalances can also cause the skin to over-produce natural oils. Deep hydrating hair care products help the skin to avoid over-producing oil and skin cells.

Curl Talk

How to wash and condition for maximum curl care:

1. Hydration is key for shampooing and conditioning. Your curls want moisture, moisture and more moisture!

2. Avoid inexpensive shampoos and conditioners! Most products use some type of alcohol as a preservative for botanical ingredients… products from the grocery store use the worst alcohols that dry and damage your hair. Get to know your products and product companies.

3. Once you know a shampoo or conditioner does not work for you, don’t continue to use it! Return it to the store or donate it to a shelter. Why spend good money on your hair service and not on your hair care? More hair trauma happens at home than out in the elements!

Dry Your Hair Without Drying Out Your Hair
How to dry for maximum curl care:
1. Towel Drying: Patting is the correct method. NO rubbing with rough towel fibers! PAT PAT PAT Blot Blot Blot. This is the best way to keep your hair from getting frizzy.

Styling Tips
Go to Products I recommend at my website under Kevin Murphy and also look under Davines for recommenations for the best curly styling.

1. Apply product to the thickest and driest parts of your hair first.

2. Don’t use too much product: it weighs down your curls and creates a droopy appearance. Use just enough to hold your style, no more!

3. Application: when you have the right amount of product in your hand, rub it between palms break down clotted elements and create a smooth texture.

4. Use your fingertips to deliver your product throughout hair. Rub your fingertips into your palms to grab more product. This will ensure that you don’t overload the hair with too much product in any one place.

Quick Steps for Daily Curl Care

1. Always rinse the morning of the second day. Use extra hydrating treatment to the ends if needed.

2. When shampooing, do a quick first wash to loosen excess dirt and styling product. Then shampoo a second time for full hair cleansing and treatment purposes.

3. When conditioning, always notice how the roots to the ends feel before applying conditioner. Apply conditioner to the ends first, then through the mid lengths. Apply to the scalp only if the scalp is feeling dry.

4. Don’t rinse out all of the conditioner. Try to leave a bit to protect the hair ends from drying during the day.

5. For a deeper treatment: after shampooing, blot off excess water from the hair with a towel. This will ensure extra absorption for your conditioner! Hair is like a sponge: when dry it will absorb, and when it is full of liquid the sponge can not hold more.

6. Apply product to damp hair while head is upside down. Apply small amount to your fingers and run the product through hair from the crown section scalp out to the ends. Then smooth all the hairs together from the hairline twisting the product into the curls. Re-apply if needed.

7. While setting the curls into place remember to use a comb to help smooth out the messiness. If the hair looks messy while drying then it will be messy when it’s dry.

8. Note: brief blow drying before setting the curls can help speed up the styling process.

9. Once in place: NO TOUCHING until at least 90% dry.

When curls are dry and frizzy, know that they need more moisture and setting help.
Common Sense Rule: If your curls dries messy then is will be messy. If I looks smooth while drying then better chances it will dry w/less frizz!

Kevin Murphy Hair Styling Contest!

Underground stylist search for 10 global Stylist to win a trip to Melborne, Australia to meet Kevin Murphy's team. I started with Aveda in 1991, and for the past 5 years I have been with Davines (www.davines.com) and Kevin Murphy (www.kevinmurphy.com.au) hair care. I finally have found two products that actually perform well with all hair types, for everyday styling and for high fashion styling. I love my hair care lines: they help the environment while making humans look and feel beautiful. Now with the support of Best Business Center in Portland, OR for sustainable business practices, I can live and work in a health environment.

Here are 10 ways to start greening your salon today:

1. Check your electric bill for the $ spent then go to www.carbonfootprint.com/businesscalculator.aspx to look up your carbon foot print.

2. Switch all of your light bulbs to Soft White Compact Fluorescent, the best for salon lighting! (26watt = 100 watts or 14 watts= 60 watts… these bulbs cannot be used with dimmer switches) Traditional bulbs allow your fixtures to pull small amounts of energy even when the lights are turned off. When you change over to the Compact Fluorescents you will notice that the light takes a second or two to turn on… this is because the bulbs are not pulling energy when off, and they need an extra moment to gather a full charge. My bill was cut below half after the first month!!

3. Change your break room, bathroom and treatment rooms to sensor light systems. These will keep the light usage down in places where people often forget to turn them off. You can use low wattage lights, the compact Fluorescents do not work with sensor systems.

4. Water flow/ usage can add up, both in terms of environmental waste and in terms of cost. Use sink tap flow reducing rings that help avoid over using water. The best way is to note your sink faucet size and ask your hardware clerk to help find the part you need.

5. Turning the hot water temperature down from 140 degrees to 120 can save 6 –10% in energy costs.

6. Insulating your water heater and hot water pipes is something that everyone should do (both home and biz). They make "water heater blankets" that you can buy at the hardware store for usually around $20. It can save 6 - 9% on energy use for the water heater. Putting a timer on the water heater can also save energy, especially if the salon is only open 5-6 days a week.

Here's more info from the federal site on water heaters : http://www.energysavers.gov/your_home/water_heating/index.cfm/mytopic=13090

7. Change your cleaning supplies to the eco / human friendly: start with any Green Seal Certified products http://www.greenseal.org/findaproduct .

8. Notice your salon waste: How much is hair, foil, cups and paper? I have a few solutions.

a. Mark and label Three Metal Garbage cans: Hair recycling, Paper product recycling, and Foil Recycling (all aluminum can be recycled in most cities… keep them in tight round balls so they can be easily sorted)

b. Contact http://www.matteroftrust.org/programs/hairmatsinfo.html to see about donating your hair clipping for oil spill clean-up. The postage for sending boxes of hair is a write-off, plus the hair weighs nothing.

c. Contact local gardeners co-op / urban farms for hair clipping donations. Hair can be mixed with the soil to help in many ways around the planets and trees. Hair can also be used to help insulate during the colder months. Google search this topic to find uses for hair clippings in your community.

9. Choose to use recycled papers, compost-able drinking cups "made from corn." Ask all employees/staff members to bring in reusable dishware.

10. Join Green cause to help reduce your Carbon footprint. The Davines Zero Impact Program for salons is one way to get involved (they plant trees to help offset your carbon foot print). Divide your hair into two sections.

a. “The front section runs from the tops of your ears to the top of your head, including your bangs,” Cakebread says. “Once you have separated the front section, part as desired and clip these two pieces out of the way. These pieces will be used in the last step to connect the whole style together.”
b. “The back section should now be pulled into a smooth ponytail in the middle of your head,” she adds. “Use a thick ponytail holding band that will not slip or break, and pull tight to the head.”

2. Apply a bit of light hairspray to help smooth the flyaway hairs. Brush the hairspray through the ponytail until your hair is completely smooth.

3. Take small sections roughly one half-inch thick from the ponytail and start to twist until the curls are wound tightly against one another.

4. When each section is twisted tightly, pin with bobby pins close to the ponytail holder.

5. Arrange sections around the ponytail holder, leaving the centermost section for last.

6. After you have twisted the centermost section, pin it on top to finish the cluster of twists.

7. For an extra secure hold, criss-cross the bobby pins to lock onto one another.

8. To finish, unclip the front pieces, break into sections and twist.

9. Gently pin the front pieces near the rear cluster as best suits your facial features.

10. Apply light hair spray keep the twists from undoing.

LifeStyle Beauty Radio Show

LifeStyle Beauty:

Your host Dayna Cakebread will bring you knowledge and insight from the world of beauty and hair industry professionals, and explore the connections between beauty, self-image, and self esteem. Style Trend: Soft movable fringe:
As we have seen this past summer, heavier Fringe/Bangs has made a comeback, with many women opting for a stronger and more mysterious look. Now I am seeing more women having a hard time maintaining the style — coming in for bang trims, and getting frustrated with the full time commitment. As the winter wears on we will start to see the bangs soften and start to be more movable. The part will move more to the center with light lift and blend in to the soft movement of the longer length hair and the overall style. The softer look —with less heavy fringe, less severely swept over — is less dramatic and mysterious, with more approachable sexiness in the fringe.

2. Style Trend: Curls/Waves in lower length hair is a look that is getting hot again for women with shoulder-length hair and longer. This look, currently worn by Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lopez, maintains clean smooth lines from the top of the head to the ears, with the accent wave/curls added through the middle to the ends of the length. This look is soft, sexy, and playful in the longer lengths, but classic and sophisticated in the clean upper lines. This style is particularly nice for hair lengths below jaw and above shoulder. It adds width to oval, long and heart shape faces. It looks healthy and it moves… it’s sexy.
I use a curling iron without the lip clip. Wind hair around the barrel vertically in one to two inch sections. Leave the hair ends out to create an unfinished look with organic softness. Shake curls out with fingers. For an even more sexy and playful evening look, add a beach-themed texture enhancer with a flexible hold. I recommend Davines “Glossy Moulding Putty,” or one of three products by Kevin Murphy: “Hair Resort” (thin hair), “Easy Rider” (thicker courser texture), or “Gritty Business” (blondes only… it’s grainy looking in dark hair).

3. Lifestyle Trend: In this economy, more of my clients are looking for versatile cuts that offer multiple looks and styling options. They want to be able to go from a sexy look to an interview look, and from an everyday confident look to a creative fashion look, without a trip to the salon. Get back to your stylist and ask for a cut with versatility. Then let them show you certain styles you can practice at home, so you can feel empowered to rule your world.

4. Lifestyle Trend: Eco Chic — It’s easier than ever before to find sustainable beauty product companies and eco-friendly salons. What’s more, these new generation products and practices create healthy soft looking hair with no compromise on hold and styling performance. I recommend 2 amazing hair product companies devoted to natural ingredients and sustainable practices: Davines from Italy (davines.com) and Kevin Murphy from Australia (kevinmurphy.au). Both employ environmentally sound farming practices, and both use sustainable resources and biogradable packaging. Both reject animal testing, and both address the sulfate issue by using natural sulfates from coconut and heart of palm. These beauty companies care about what’s going into the water, air and soil, as well as what’s going into our hair and skin.

Written by:
Dayna Cakebread
Owner and Stylist
Belle Epoque Salon
Portland, Oregon
Email: daynacakebread@hotmail.com

2nd Step Consulting with your stylist

The Secrets of the “Cakebread Consultation”

After I have learned why the client has chosen me for their image needs, I begin my consultation by asking three questions. These questions guide the client as well as me, and the process helps the client understand what you, as a stylist, need to get started. My questions give me working information about the client in 3 key areas:

1. Past experiences
2. Limitations
3. Personality

For Stylists: This is how I navigate the client during the consultation:

I always ask the client to have a seat with me. I sit in front of the client at eye level. I tell the client that before we start the service I have three important questions that will give me the information I need for the cut.

1. What are your pass experiences?
2. What are you limitations today? (length, fears, etc.)
3. Choose three adjectives that best describe how you want to reflect your image?

The client will need help to keep focused on each question. Always start with the three questions and you will have most of the information you need to start the service. If you ask the personality question first, before the pass experiences question, the client could lead you down a road with red flags, and a 20 minute consultation could follow. If you still don't know why they are there, then ask another three questions...

1. Are you looking for a new image, makeover/transformation today?
2. Are you looking for style to be corrected or perfected?
3. Are you looking to just to maintain the previous style?

For Clients: Look at these questions and carefully consider your answers. Your image is very important to you… you wouldn't be spending the money for a salon cut if you didn't want to look the best yourself.

The three questions in detail:

(1) What are your past experiences? Frequent complaints include:

• A style that “looked like your mother’s haircut”
• A hair cut too short / color too blonde
• Bad haircut / color
• Over styled / too much product
• Couldn’t find someone to do a makeover

Past experiences help us as a stylist learn where to go, and where not to go, with individual clients. It’s the process of elimination. Is this cut/color to be fixed, transformed, or continued? This helps both parties to discover past fears, and uncover the best course for the future.

(2) What are your limitations? Some key questions to ask yourself:

• Am I growing it out or cutting it off?
• Changing or maintaining?
• What’s too short? (Always use your hands when describing length.)

Clear communication is vital. Body gestures with your hands help us know when a client is not fully communicating with words… one example is the client who asks for 4 inches off the ends, but who actually shows a 2-inch cut request with their hands.

(3) Choose three adjectives to describe the image you wish to reflect to yourself and to others? Key questions to ask yourself:

• Is this style primarily for my work, social life, or home/family life?
• If you know your own ‘hair agenda,’ then their stylist can help educate you for daily maintenance and give you the tools and products to master your style.

Why three adjectives?
• Three is the magic number… simple and sweet. If you focus on your three adjectives (like playful, sexy and confident), then you can work together with the stylist to find the ideal cut/color during each visit. Remember that everyone has his/her own idea of what adjectives like playful, sexy and confident should look like. I recommend working with the stylist to find pictures of people who represent these adjective concepts. It’s not about finding the model with your exact face shape or ideal look… it's about the moment that you find inspiration. If you find the perfect cut by chance look at what that person is reflecting about himself or herself in the photo. Do they look playful or sexy or both? Now think about what playful, sexy and confidant looked like in the 70's, 80's and in the 90's. Every 5 years fashion changes. It goes down the line from young to old. We are all different in personality, career, facial features, hair type and body type. Choose to show your true self… or be mysterious.

1st step Consulting with your stylist about your needs!

Let me just say, I understand what it's like to go into a stylist for the first time and be terrified. One: can you trust that they will listen to you and understand who you are, and your beauty needs, in a short period of time? Second: are you going to come out with unfamiliar styling that you'll want to immediately wash out at home? Third: am I going to look like my mother? It's scary to trust your image to someone who hasn't even washed your hair yet.

Hints to think about before going in:
Ask yourself why are you going to a new stylist? Is it because…
1. Last stylist has no updated skills
2. Makes you feel bad and others around them
3. Horrible hair torture
4. Stylist does what they want, doesn’t listen
5. Stylist isn't creative or assertive
6. Your friend begs you to go her stylist for an update
7. Former stylist moved
8. Drug problem
9. Stylist talks about themselves and their problems
Why should you think about this? Well, this information is really helpful to a new stylist. It's like the golden key to help them understand your needs and, ultimately, win you as a loyal customer. This beginning story helps your new stylist understand what to do, and what not to do for you.

Notes to myself: As a stylist
1. Make sure I am updated in the lasted trends
2. Make sure I make them feel good about their hair and themselves
3. Make sure I don't mess it up
4. Make sure I am listening to them about limitations and desires
5. Make sure I suggest ideas with pictures to show fashion concepts
6. Make sure I listen to what she's been doing for styling so I can adjust how to style differently
7. Avoid changing locations if at all possible!
8. Make sure not to do DRUGS!
9. Talk with the client about their life positively

I have to say this is how I built my clientele: by knowing what not to do and to do. If you think it's scary for you? How about taking a walk on our side. When I started in my career I had no idea who was going to sit in my chair. Just to let you know, when you graduate from beauty school you have just a small handfull of ways to cut hair. Really:
1. Short Layers
2. Long Layers
3. Bob… A-line or a graduated bob, concave (A line Bob) or Convex (This is when the front is shorter then the back.)
4. Graduation layers 90 degrees and under. This when the hair lays heavy or stacked.
Yep, this is all we know. And as for our clients? Old ladies, college students, and more old ladies. Plus, we are counting down the state board quotas and the days until graduation. That's what it was like in the 90's.

Man, that's hard to write. I know it's still the same, since I have had new hires in the past three years. This is reality for every new stylist. Some are better than others at getting through these early years. Any stylist who has mastered those basic cuts can update to advanced skills with hands-on classes available in major cities in America and Europe. In addition, with more first-time clients, we build a deeper understanding about hair textures and personalities. This is when a stylist is truly equipped to help you into a future image, or maintain your current image concept.

After 15 years as a professional hairdresser, I can say I love to see a new client. I have an art and science on how to build the trust of 99% of all new clients who sit in my chair.
